Full membership requires a $500 refundable share purchase. We offer payment plans as we understand this can be an intimidating up-front cost. Why would someone want to pay that much?
Member co-ops are a model in which each member owns a part of the organization. Essentially, as a full member you pay for a refundable share (if you leave the co-op, we buy your $500 share back) and you get the benefits of being a member with voting rights and lower cost per use. Full members pay a reduced monthly fee of $6 per month. Usage rates for car bookings are also significantly lower (see table).
TL;DR: Pay more up front if you believe in the co-op structure and see yourself booking cars often or frequently.
Casual membership is an alternative option for folks who aren’t ready to commit to purchasing a share. They pay a slightly higher monthly fee ($10), but only for the months they book and drive one of our cars. So you can sign up and not book a car for months, and you will never be charged a monthly fee. Casual members pay slightly higher usage fees than full members do (see table).
TL;DR: Pay less and try out the Kootenay Carshare Co-op at no financial risk. Best for people who are curious, passing through town, or only need a vehicle once in a while.
You could compare a full membership to shopping at Costco and buying in bulk, while the casual membership is like going to a regular grocery store only when you need an item or two.
